Economic Strategy Practice
The Access Partnership Economics Strategy practice is a team of economists, econometricians, and public policy advisors.
We advise our clients from the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors on the forces shaping their markets, and enable them to make better informed decisions by leveraging rigorous analysis supported by robust evidence, with the purpose to drive growth and improve well-being for themselves as well as the communities they are part of.
We combine the robustness of economic analysis with a practical appreciation of business and government, to support our clients in making and communicating their critical investment and public policy decisions.
We have three broad focus areas: Digital Economy & Trade, Economic Development, and the Future of Work. We are committed to helping solve the world’s most complex problems.
What you'll do:
As a Director within Economics Strategy, you will play a key role in practice leadership, be a though leader, as well as a people and project leader.
You will be a thought leader in your area of subject matter expertise, and will use that expertise to contribute to client pitches and proposals, project delivery, mentoring of our team, and to drive the long-term growth of our practice.
As well as being responsible for your own deliverables and schedule, you will also be accountable for leading the work of others. You will be expected to lead multiple consulting project teams, including managing the relationship with our client and planning the work of the team, but the most significant focus will be contributing your individual expertise to problem solving – on technical, and project and client management issues. Your tasks could include developing research methodologies, including systematic literature reviews and primary research design, as well as developing approaches to data analysis, including specifying quantitative economic models and econometric models, drafting and reviewing client deliverables, as well as making client and public presentations. You will be leading multiple large teams, including cross-practice teams, to leverage subject matter expertise from across the organisation in areas such as AI, data governance, and digital transformation.
You will have a solid background in economics and econometrics, and a passion for using your economics training to work with clients to solve their real world problems. You will also be intellectually curious and thrive on playing a role in addressing challenges at the intersection of economics, public policy, and technology. You will be an adept problem-solver, able to support your project teams to arrive quickly at critical issues and guide them on the approach to resolve them.
Communications
- Ensuring that client proposals, research reports, presentation materials, and other products, are at a client-ready level of quality.
- Effectively influencing, through strong written and verbal communications skills, senior stakeholders, both internal and external, and independently leading significant engagements with external stakeholders.
- Effectively building and maintain a strong network of external supporters, from industry, academia, and government.
- Effectively representing the Economics Strategy practice within the firm, amongst cross-practice project teams.
- Supporting the Practice Head in providing practice and project updates to senior management and central teams, as required.
Team Leadership and Talent Management
- Maintaining a curious mindset and fostering a practice and project environment that encourages and rewards curiosity among team members.
- Being a strong team leader, by always supporting the team.
- Driving the development of technical expertise of the practice by sharing your subject matter expertise, and helping identify training and development opportunities.
- Providing guidance and mentorship to practice team members.
- Supporting the Practice Head to build, develop, manage, and motivate a high-performing practice team.
Operational Excellence
- Meet regulatory and internal compliance requirements.
- Ensuring existing workflows and processes are adhered to, and constantly looking for opportunity to improve efficiency.
- Helping to create a culture of quality, by implementing quality assurance measures and risk management approaches on projects, to ensure high client satisfaction.
- Supporting the Practice Head to ensure that the individual billability targets for members of the practice team are met, and that the financial performance of the overall practice is achieved.
Project Management
- Ensuring strong project governance, so that the structure of accountability and responsibility support effective project delivery and output quality, as a means of ensuring client delivery success.
- Supporting the project teams to monitor billability and productivity of its members, as well as gross margins on the project overall, to ensure cost-effective client delivery.
- Helping to address challenges around client delivery, including by anticipating and ongoing management of project risks and interdependencies within and across projects, to help ensure successful client delivery.
- Supporting the Practice Head to drive a strong project management culture.
Customer Focus
- Building strong client relationships by delivering real client value through a genuine understanding of client needs.
- Ensuring high client satisfaction through high quality delivery, clear communication, and appropriate responsiveness.
- Bringing a commercial mindset to client discussions, with a clear understanding of our role and value-add as a professional advisors.
- Consistently thinking of adding value to clients by contributing your in-depth subject matter expertise and sound, independent advice.
Strategic Planning & Growth
- Help to articulate the strategic vision for the practice team, within the context of the firm’s strategy, so as to contextualize tactical objectives, and help engender support for achieving the firm’s and practice’s goals.
- Proactively identifies and works to support the pursuit of opportunities to grow the practice.
- Maintains vigilance over developments in the market, and supports the Practice Head to guide the direction to grow the practice.
What you'll need:
- A degree in economics, public policy, statistics or other relevant discipline from a reputable university, and a strong academic track record. A post-graduate qualification (i.e., Masters or PhD) would be highly regarded, although not essential.
- Substantive experience working with senior decision-makers, often at a top-tier strategy consulting firm, an economics advisory firm, or in a senior public sector role.
- Strong capability to influence stakeholders at all levels, and the ability to “put yourself in the perspective of the audience”.
- Substantive experience leading people in direct reporting relationships, or as part of discrete projects.
- Demonstrable subject matter expertise in economics and its relevance to the digital economy, international trade, economic and industry development, and labour and skills would be highly regarded.
- Strong structured research and analysis skills, and a deep understanding of various quantitative and qualitative analysis tools and techniques. Proficiency with statistical packages such as R, Python, EViews, and Stata would be highly regarded.
